Fully restored medieval property in Campania, Southern Italy
Grotto Ventuno is in the Antico Borgo (medieval village) of Calitri in beautiful unspoilt countryside on the borders of Campania and Basilicata. The mediaeval properties are being restored and renovated to breathe life into the village and the nearby town. This is the real Italy – you will be welcomed by the local people, experience good food and wine, and enjoy the relaxed pace of life lived as it has been for hundreds of years.
Built into the side of the mountain, the grotto was originally for storage and to house animals and has a beautiful exposed stone wall to the rear together with hooks in the ceiling for hanging the hams and the original antique kitchen on which the tomato sauces would have been prepared to store for the winter. The grotto has a mezzanine floor sleeping two people and a double futon downstairs, and is fully equipped (pots, pans, bedding etc) to accommodate four.
Calitri is situated equidistant from Naples and Bari airports, both of which are served by several budget airlines and from where it is easy to pick up a hire car and take the Naples-Bari motorway before heading into the hills of the southern Appenines. As well as the local attractions it is within two hours drive of Pompei, Vesuvius and the Sorrento coast or the southern coastline of Basilicata and Calabria.
There is a local English speaking agent, who can also help you to organise trips and excursions or any of the courses (cookery, sculpture, painting etc) that are on offer in the Palazzo in the Borgo. Village life revolves around the many feast days, with the opportunity to experience the local traditions and feria. You can find more information about local attractions and activities on the internet by putting Calitri into your search engine.
